Eye Rubbing

The most common cause of itchy eyes is ocular allergies. The allergy itself is usually not a serious problem but the associated eye rubbing has the potential to cause serious and irreversible damage to the eye. When rubbing the eyes, there is mechanical micro-trauma to the cornea (see video). This constant micro-trauma causes progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea which leads to a condition called Keratoconus. If left untreated, Keratoconus will lead to permanent vision loss which can only be corrected with a cornea transplant. If you suffer from itchy eyes it is important to consult with your ophthalmologist for a full exam to exclude keratoconus and to treat the underlying allergy.
