Fireworks and Eye Safety

Thermal and chemical injuries to the eyes can result in irreversible damage to the ocular surface. Prevention of these sorts of injuries is always better than cure, so it is advised to avoid situations that may put you at risk of ocular injuries. In the case of fireworks, it is best to enjoy these displays from a safe distance. If you are igniting fireworks yourself it is strongly advised to wear protective eyewear which completely shields the eyes and creates a seal over the cheeks and the brow. In the event of an eye injury caused by fireworks, the most important first step is to profusely irrigate the eyes with clean water to remove any debris which may continue to cause damage. Do not irrigate the eyes with milk or any other liquid substitute. Clean tap water is best. The next step is to consult with your eye specialist for further treatment as soon as possible.
